Tools on participation
WASH Accountability Resources (Global WASH Cluster, 2009). This handbook is a collection of accountability resources and case studies from the WASH sector.
Camp Committee Assessment Tool (HAP, 2010). Developed by the HAP team in Haiti, this tool is designed for assessing the role and functioning of committees, to enable agencies to make an informed decision about how to work with the committees and the wider population. The tool can be adapted and used in any context where agencies are working with groups as representatives of a wider population.

Community Activity Logs (Oxfam GB, based on a tool developed by Concern Worldwide, 2008) can encourage active participation, and enable communities to follow-up on actions promised by visitors.
Case studies on beneficiary participation
"Cash for Choice" project, Sungi Development Foundation, 2011. This case study is an example of a successful initiative aimed at providing immediate unconditional financial assistance to disaster survivors of the 2010 floods in Pakistan.
Participation in Shelter project - from design to implementation and monitoring (Muslim Aid Bangladesh, 2008). This case study focuses on Muslim Aid’s community participatory approach adopted as part of their permanent shelter project to involve affected-communities during project design, implementation and monitoring, following Cyclone Sidr. An extract has been translated into French.

'Young Voices, Big Impressions' (Save the Children in Myanmar, 2009) produced a child friendly report based on an external evaluation. This was designed to have children's participation as a critical component, as in the end they are the main beneficiaries. Save the Children in Myanmar also prepared a brief note on the Process and Methodology used.
Participatory beneficiary selection process and Community Monitoring Committees (Concern Worldwide, 2008). This case study was developed following Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh to increase levels of participation as part of Concern's rehabilitation projects. The Community Monitoring Committees also play a key role in the complaint handling mechanism that was piloted.
3D Animation for Community Mobilisation and Accountability (World Vision, 2007). It outlines an approach used by the Sri Lanka Tsunami Response Team (LTRT) to facilitate increased participation, through improved understanding and discussion leading to greater community cohesion.
Beneficiary Reference Groups (BRGs) (Tearfund, 2007). Created and trained to increase community participation as part of programmes in Northern Kenya. This case study includes the ToR used to select members of the BRG and how they were established in each community.
Beneficiary Accountability in Afghanistan (Medair, 2008). The methodology of this project ensures that the beneficiaries are involved in determining the outcomes of the project according to their identified needs and requirements.
