Case studies and tools

The Case studies and tools section outlines the approaches to accountability that have been developed and tested by HAP members. Although they do not contain absolute answers, they give ideas about possible approaches to strengthen quality and accountability in humanitarian operations.

The case studies and tools are organised according to the six benchmarks of the 2010 HAP Standard in Accountability and Quality Management (pdf, 777 Kb):

  1. Establishing and delivering on commitments
  2. Staff competency
  3. Sharing information
  4. Participation
  5. Handling complaints
  6. Learning and continual improvement

In addition, some case studies and tools provide general information about improving accountability in the field and working with partners. Some materials are available in French and Creole.

It is important to highlight that some of the case studies and tools contained in this section still refer to the previous Standard, the 2007 HAP Standard in Humanitarian Accountability and Quality Management (pdf, 448 Kb). While there are changes in the terms used, the aim and essence of the previous Standard has not changed. These case studies and tools continue to remain relevant and useful and can be used with minor adaptations.

If you would like to share a case study or tool, please contact the HAP Secretariat: secretariat@hapinternational.org

Kargi women, from a Tearfund project, taking part in a focus group discussion in August 2007

"If you give them that opportunity to see who is the poorest among them, to see who is the neediest, to make their own suggestion, then they will appreciate you for that and they will not blame you or bring complaints back. Explain to them [the community], tell them the truth and let them choose for themselves."
